ExpatExpert author Robin Pascoe's newest book on relocation,
Moveable Marriage: Relocate Your Relationship without Breaking It,
has some pretty tough commentary on how corporations treat accompanying
spouses. But not for Schlumberger.
Instead, Schlumberger gets kudos in the chapter entitled "The Role of
the Company." Under the heading, "Spousal intranet and connectivity projects,"
Pascoe holds Schlumberger up among the companies that others should emulate. |
"Some of the greatest company success stories involve using
technology to support spouses and help them stay connected with other employees'
families. SpouseConnect, put together by the oil services giant Schlumberger,
is a good example of using high tech as a high touch tool. More than three
thousand Schlumberger spouses (the number rises every month) are put in
touch with each other through this program. It involves not only an intranet
they can access for information about moving details and company programs,
but also takes away some of the computer dependence many spouse have on
their working mates. Spouses are trained to help each other find their
way around the net and get e-mail accounts sorted out when new families
arrive." (Pascoe:50)
And later, on "isolation and dependence" Pascoe states, "The Internet has
been nothing short of a communications miracle in helping relocated families
feel connected and less alone when they first arrive somehwere new."
Review comments from SpouseConnect Program Manager, Tracey McTague,
appear on the book's inside ook's inside cover.
